Interview With Jennifer Newton: The Reality of Creating a Fashion Line

Interview With Jennifer Newton: The Reality of Creating a Fashion Line

Have you ever made impulsive decisions, like quitting your job to try a totally new thing? Did it succeed? Well in Jennifer’s case it did.

The inspiration

Jennifer Newton went to business school and studied sales. After college she got a corporate job.  Even though she was new, she quickly discovered that the company was male dominated and that made it difficult for her to move up. She wouldn’t have the same opportunities as a man would, no matter how hard she could work. She knew she could do better, so she decided to leave the company. A female director who worked at the company helped Jennifer and opened new doors for her. Later, Jennifer created Plush Apparel.

Plush Apparel

Plush Apparel was founded16 years ago in 2009 by Jennifer Newton. They are known for their fleece-lined tights, the product that got them started. They create comfortable, luxurious, and simple clothing. From beachwear to pajamas, Plush Apparel offers all of these wardrobe essentials.

The origin of fleece-lined tights

She came up with the idea, fleece-lined tights because it was “freezing in NYC”. She had no background in fashion and looked online for help. Her friend, who was a showroom rep, taught her about the industry and helped get her in department stores like Bloomingdale’s.

Jennifer could see her brand take off in the first year. She said that as soon as they put the products out, people were buying them. As her fleece-lined tights got popular, she turned it into a full-on brand. The brand grew and she expanded to include maternity clothing and kids.

Challenges

One challenge Jennifer Newton faced was finding reliable vendors. She said that these things were trial and error. Once there was an instance where her packaging was stained. Eventually she found vendors she could trust and rely on.

Advice

Some advice Jennifer would give herself when she was first starting would be to join groups or find a partner. When she started, she did this all alone. She worked 18-hour days for the first five years. Joining groups allows you to help others start their business and they will help you as well. If you have a partner, you can teach each other things that the other person didn’t know.

Jennifer Newton is an inspiration to women who want to start a business and to everyone who wants to take a risk and try something different.
